Praia do Norte is where the largest waves ever surfed have been ridden — an underwater canyon focuses the swell straight onto the beach. For everyone bar a handful of big-wave surfers this is a spectator spot. The main beach, Praia da Nazare, breaks far more gently over sand and is usable outside the big swell windows.
